GRANTS & TRAINING

Amazon Partnerships collaborates with indigenous Kichwa communities that want to create their own projects to protect the rainforest and promote the conservation values of their culture.

Unlike other organizations, we do not bring projects to communities; communities propose projects to us. We support them with small grants and intensive training in project management so they can learn to sustain their results over the long term.

Projects can range from agro-forestry to production of traditional handicrafts to environmental education to ecological sanitation, among others.

In 2009, in cooperation with Global Pediatric Alliance, we trained three communities to install and maintain household rainwater catchment systems, which deliver safe drinking water without impacting fragile wetlands and streams.

Our Results—2009
  • Systems Installed: 65
  • Communities Participating: 3
  • Families Benefiting: 56
  • People Benefiting: 250-300
  • Training Workshops Held: 25

"I congratulate the community water inspectors. They are doing a great job helping the families maintain their systems and conserve water."—Nelly Tanguila, Palma Amazonica
